Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Training

What is it?


Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training as one of the first steps in training their dogs. The AKC’s CGC Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The CGC Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

What are the Benefits?


Our obedience classes are a great step towards getting your dog Canine Good Citizen certified. Here are some of the advantages of the program:

 

  • Certain apartment complexes, parks and other public places will only allow dogs that have proof of passing the CGC test. Showing proof of CGC completion gives you a better chance of getting into an apartment.
  • The Canine Good Citizen test is often one of the first steps to becoming a therapy dog.
  • Use the CGC test to your advantage against breed discrimination laws.
  • Training will enhance the bond between you and your dog.
  • Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with. They respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training.
  • The Canine Good Citizen test is a good preparation for more advanced training.

 

How do I get my dog CGC Certified?


There isn't a formal class your pup has to attend in order for them to take the test. However, there are dog training classes, such as the one taught at Southcoast Dog Training & Care, Inc., where the training class focuses on the test items.


When you think your dog is ready, you'll sign up for a CGC test administered by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator. When your dog passes the test, the evaluator will give you the paperwork to send to AKC to request the CGC certificate.
